Purchasing insurance for a cycle can be a frustrating experience. While most of us view a cycle as just another type of vehicle, some insurance companies just don't see it that way. Some companies have learned (or are attempting to learn) how to insure cycles and still be profitable. Some companies have given up in their quest. And still others may offer it, but at a ridiculously high price. The article should be able to guide you to a good policy. First, always check with your present car carrier. These people already know you, your driving record, your stability and so on. If they have cycle insurance, ask them for a rate quote. Many times, that company may offer you a discount for second vehicle. If they do have a good rate, fine. If there rate is either to high or the company does not offer cycle insurance, thank them and move on. To engage in any debate at this point with your agent, is the first step in frustration. Your agent, regardless of how much business you do with him, or how long you have known him, or any other factor, plays no role in the company's view on cycle insurance. Trying to get him/her to change company policy is the equivalent of getting counter help at McDonalds to raise dividends on their stock. Next, either check with your local cycle store or look through local cycle magazines. Cycle stores have been selling insurance for a long time. Sad to say, many of them only sell one company. The decision to sell only company may be because of commission structure or ease of using only one rate chart. Regardless, if they offer it, ask for a rate. Also, check the coverages. Many cycle store sell only basic policies. Local magazines usually have several insurance ads. These are usually agents that represent several companies. No one company has the best rate for all cycles. Some companies have great rates for Harleys, but hate sport cycles. Some love touring bikes, but hate Harleys. Some are great for liability only policies, but have high rates for other coverages like theft or uninsured motorist. A good independent agent can point you in the right direction. These three calls should result in a great amount of input as to what is available for you. It should help make the process of getting insurance as least frustrating as possible. As a final note, make sure to ask what discounts are available. Many companies offer discounts for proper training, or club affiliations, or multi cycles. Some companies offer second year claim free discounts or experience discounts. These discounts can, in some cases, add up to as much as 45 to 50% off. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Someone is going to make some money off your purchase. Make them earn it. Ask what is being covered and most importantly, what is not being covered!! It is always easier to find the little pitfalls before a claim happens. I assure you, you do not want the exclusions explained to you after you have a claim! I have always said, and will continue to say for years to come, the smart buyer is the educated buyer!! Safe cycling............................mike........... |
